Message to Readers,
I have created this website to help readers understand the symptoms, and the prevalence of pancreatic cancer in the world. I hope this website can be a "one stop" area for valuable information about pancreatic cancer and its implication on the general population. I will be trying to consolidate research done on pancreatic cancer and citing my sources, so that the reader can read more in detail about the work on the publisher's website. I hope you find the information valuable!
My story and Motivation:
I chose to make this website to help others notice the early signs of pancreatic cancer to the best of their ability and understand what symptoms are associated with the it. I have a personal connection with pancreatic cancer, because someone in my family was recently diagnosed with it. The family member is in a middle eastern country where I am unable to see him and I have been finding it very hard to help him due to my distance away from him. The pancreatic cancer was detected late and he is now battling through the harsh chemotherapy treatment.

The Non-medical Factors:
It is important to understand that not everything can be understood about illness based on the disease that is diagnosed. There are many factors that have to be taken into consideration when a patient is diagnosed with a disease. Things like Socioeconomic status, religious practices, and cultural medications have to be analyzed and understood before a healthcare professional can proceed with treatment. It is important for medical anthropologists to view this disease differently than a doctor would, in order to contribute to the patient's overall comfort. There are six different approaches that a medical anthropologist can assess disease and each of them are important for understanding all of the social implications that factor into a person's illness. A medical anthropologist can use the biological, ecological, applied, ethno medical, experiential, and critical approaches to understand what factors are playing into a person's ailment. It is very important for anthropologists to do this because some factors cannot be seen by just assessing the disease. For example, my family member was diagnosed with cancer and was hesitant to go in for treatment because of his old age and his cultural belief of medicine. He is used to traditional medicine and initially avoided going to get treatment from his doctor. This example is one of many that exist in the world, and it is important to understand how illness is effected by cultural, social, and socioeconomic factors.

Clinical Definition of Pancreatic Cancer:
- It is a disease where malignant tumors are found in the tissues of the pancreas. (http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/types/pancreatic)
- It is usually called a silent disease because it does not cause symptoms, unless it blocks the common bile duct and bile cannot enter the digestive system. (http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=4746)
- I have also included a YouTube video at the top of the page to explain what pancreatic cancer is (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HPL6xVfO1w)
